In mid-March we got a huge thaw. I figured at the rate we were going we’d see bare ground by the first of April. Then we got a big dumper (about a foot and a half.) Just about the time that melted we got another dumper. Then another, and another and another until here we are today. This photo is what we’re seeing at Macks Inn right now. Of course out on the flats by Harriman (and down by Last Chance in general) things are almost all melted. But from about the ranger station at Ponds north things are still plenty deep.
So if you’re coming for Memorial Day (only about three weeks away, plan for some snow in the trees and brisk temperatures. The rivers are running plenty high, so the lakes may offer the best fishing. But one thing’s for certain. Your worst day in Island Park will be miles ahead of your best day wherever you spend the rest of your time, so get packed and get on up here. Just come ready for an unpredictable spring.
