Densities are up and the fishing has improved over the past couple of years in the upper reaches of the Henrys Fork. This is a the result of better precipitation and higher flows through the winter out of Island Park Dam.The Box Canyon can be outstanding fishing in the fall. Very few anglers float during this period, as water levels are low, and the weather can be brutal. For those willing to make the trip, anglers can find excellent fishing for large rainbow trout by nymphing, or fishing streamers. On the right day, good hatches of blue winged olives can lead to some excellent dry fly fishing.
The fishery below Ashton Dam comes back to life in the fall. The best fishing is on nymphs, though blue-winged olives can be excellent on the right day. Big brown trout can also be caught on streamers. If planning to fish the lower river, please recognize that access on the lower river is dependent on willing landowners, so be courteous and respectful of private property.
